Release Number: 071015

Schriever officials will host a ceremony, July 15, 2015, at 3 p.m. in the wing headquarters building in honor of the Global Positioning System's 20 years of full operational capability.

The Air Force confirmed the GPS full operational capability July 17, 1995.  During the last 20 years, GPS has become an integral part of technology that affects the lives of billions of people around the world.

Members of the 2nd and 19th Space Operations Squadrons here conduct the command and control mission of the 39 satellite GPS constellation.  Beyond its essential capability for the military, GPS is a worldwide utility that provides the highest accuracy data available to people all around the world and enables such vital activities as weather forecasting, transportation, global commerce and farming/agriculture.

On July 15, the 45th Space Wing is scheduled to launch GPS IIF-10 aboard an Atlas V.  GPS operators here will explain their role during the launch as part of the event.  B-roll from the morning's planned activities will be available for media use.  Additionally, the launch can be viewed at this link:  http://www.ulalaunch.com/.

Following the post launch presentation, Colorado Springs City Councilmember Larry Bagley will present the GPS operators with a proclamation on behalf of the city council declaring July 17, 2015, GPS Day.

*Editor's Note:  Media wishing to attend the event need to RSVP by calling the 50th Space Wing Public Affairs Office at 567-5040 not later than Monday, July 13 at 4 p.m.  The gate call for media will be at 2:30 p.m.  Additionally, subject matter experts will be available for interviews following the presentations.
