9/30/2008 - SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Troy Calhoun, U.S. Air Force Academy football coach, visited Schriever Sept. 26 to share both his excitement for Academy football and respect for the military.
The two-year Academy coach and also a graduate met with Schriever's leadership along with several Academy graduates and former athletes for lunch at the Satellite Dish Dining Facility before speaking at a pep rally held in the base auditorium.
Col. Cary Chun, 50th Space Wing commander, Griff, a base mascot, and a cheering crowd of supporters welcomed the coach to the rally.
Coach Calhoun told the troops his job was about character development more than anything else. Academy men and women know they'll have rough days they'll need to persevere, but they're taught integrity, core values and guts so when it's time for them to lead they're prepared, according to the coach.
"First and foremost, I'm helping prepare them to lead and serve," said Coach Calhoun.
Of course they want to win big every game and try to make the upmost of everyone's experience, but Academy football is about much more than just winning games, the coach said.
"You got to have heart," said the Falcon football coach.
When the Academy chooses a cadet, they look for someone with a heart that wants to serve, lead and grow as a human being, said Coach Calhoun. They have to be talented, motivated and a team player.
The coach encouraged Schriever troops to remember that their work, like the Academy football players, is much more than just a job; they have a higher calling to serve their country and they are held to a higher standard, a higher moral code.
"In your gut, in your heart, you know it's for the right purpose and that's what should stir you up. Every day when you get up to go to work, don't let it be trite," Coach Calhoun said.
The football coach encouraged troops to be excited to be part of something greater and to work with people of such great character.
