Academy holds Falcon 50 Race Series
The Falcon 50 Race Series takes place May 4 at the U.S. Air Force Academy Reservation and in the surrounding mountains. It is a scenic and challenging route that will take its participants through some of the most beautiful parts of the Academy grounds and over some of the best kept trails around. All paid entrants will receive a customized race shirt, access to some of the best stocked aid stations in the sport and cheered on by the most enthusiastic volunteers you could find, every step of the way. Every finisher will be awarded a commemorative Falcon 50 flight patch, ultramarathon finishers will receive a Falcon 50 belt buckle and all will be invited to the finish line barbeque. Events are Falcon 50 ultramarathon (50 miles), Falcon 50 military heavy (26.2 miles with boots, utility uniform and a 35-pound ruck) and Falcon 50 marathon (26.2 miles) Registration opens 5 p.m. Dec. 10. Park rangers issues free passes
Park Rangers from Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument will be at Schriever AFB on 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 14 distributing free access passes to federal parks. The rangers will be distributing the passes at the base housing community center and outside the Satellite Dish Dining Facility. Passes available are the lifetime access pass for those who are disabled and the annual active-duty military passes depending on eligibility. Any rated disability qualifies one for a lifetime access pass. Proof of disability is not required; individuals requesting a lifetime access pass will sign an affidavit stating that they have a permanent disability. To obtain an annual active-duty military pass, a common access card must be presented. Active-duty family members must present a dependent card. SAP presents winter art gallery

Join bench press, deadlift competition
The annual Schriever Bench Press and Deadlift Competition is 9 a.m. Jan. 18 at the main fitness center. Prizes will be awarded to the top three males and top three females who lift the greatest percentage of body weight. Participants may compete in one or both competitions. Please register by Jan. 16. The main fitness center is operating under holiday hours 7 a.m.-3 p.m. for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, Dec. 24 and New Year's Day. The fitness center annex is closed. Right Start Newcomers Orientation is 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 21 in Building T-135. Apply for AFAS education grant
The Air Force Aid Society's General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant begins accepting applications until March 8. Online applications for the 2013-2014 academic year will be available from the society's website, www.afas.org. These $2,000 grants are awarded to selected sons and daughters of Active Duty, Title 10 AGR/Reserve, Title 32 AGR performing full-time active duty, retired, retired reserve and deceased Air Force members; spouses of active duty members and Title 10 AGR/Reservists; and surviving spouses of deceased personnel for their full-time undergraduate studies. Class helps dorm dwellers move
The Airman and Family Readiness Center holds a dorm move class 2-3 p.m. Dec. 20 in Building 101. This class is geared toward all Airmen anticipating a move out of the dorms within three months. Participants learn how to identify how much money is needed to afford to live off base, project a budget based on monthly expenditures and decide if they are financially fit to move out of the dorms. The Schriever Airman and Family Readiness Center and Civilian Personnel Office team up to bring all the steps needed in the process of applying for federal employment. El Paso provides child support assistance
Colorado received a federal grant to assist service members with their child support and related issues. El Paso County Child Support Services is providing the assistance under the grant to either parent provided at least one of the parents is active-duty military. Under the grant, child support issues, including paternity and parenting time, can be addressed before a service member is deployed, upon redeployment or if stationed locally in El Paso County. The grant allows for pre-deployment cases to be expedited so that the child support issues can be resolved before the service member is deployed. An El Paso County Child Support Services military liaison will be at Schriever 1-3 p.m. Dec. 17. If interested, contact the 50th Space Wing legal office at 567-5050. The liaison will be available on base on a regular basis to assist service members and their families on the last Tuesday of each month. The military snow sport extravaganza, SnoFest, is here again. The U.S. Air Force Academy, Peterson, F.E. Warren, Schriever and Buckley Air Force Bases are partnering to host the annual event at Keystone Resort, Colo., Jan. 25-27. Outdoor Rec offers activities
Schriever AFB and Fort Carson have joined forces to provide people with outdoor winter activities. Sign up for ice climbing trips, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and mountaineering trips. Trips are available almost every weekend beginning in late December. Trips are available for all levels of experience. Protect PA, FOUO information
In accordance to Air Force Instruction 33-332, Air Force Privacy Program, e-mails shall be encrypted when they contain "For Official Use Only" and Privacy Act information sent to other Air Force and Department of Defense offices for official purposes. Additional protection methods may include password protecting the information in a separate document. When transmitting personal information over e-mail, add "FOUO" to the beginning of the subject line, followed by the subject, and apply the following statement at the beginning of the e-mail: "The information herein is For Official Use Only which must be protected under the Privacy Act of 1974, as amended. Unauthorized disclosure or misuse of this personal information may result in criminal and/or civil penalties." Do not indiscriminately apply this statement to e-mails. VA holds medical records review
A Department of Veterans Affairs medical records review is available from 9 a.m. Dec. 21 at the new Airman and Family Readiness Center location in Building 101. If you are 180 days from separation or retirement, now is the time to start your disability claim with the VA. The initial medical records review is provided by the Disabled American Veterans. If you are leaving the military and have service-related medical issues, it is in your best interest to start the process for a disability claim. Depending on the extent of your disability, you may be eligible for monthly monetary compensation, veteran's preference into federal service, and many other benefits depending on the state you decide to settle in. Register for pre-separation briefing
The pre-separation counseling briefing is the first step to separating or retiring from the military. This briefing is mandatory. During this briefing, individuals will register for an e-benefits account, begin their individual transition plan and learn about all the benefits and services available when leaving the military. Documentation of this briefing is accomplished through the completion of the DD Form 2648. If you are a year from separation or two years from retirement, start the transition process now. Program helps military-to-civilian transition
Active-duty military members separating and retiring should attend the five-day Transition Assistance Program seminar. The program is facilitated and funded by the Department of Labor. The first two and a half days focus on networking, job search, résumés and interviewing. It ends with an employer panel offering tips on what employers are looking for in terms of résumés and future employees. The next class is 8 a.m.4:30 p.m. Dec 17-21. DOD increases SIPRNet security measures
The Department of Defense is adding increased measures of validating, certifying and controlling who can log in to SIPRNet. In the coming months, individuals will no longer be able access to the SIPRNet by using just the user name/password. All SIPRNet users will require a token; similar to the common access card, but specifically for SIPRNet access. Wing leadership wants all individuals who require SIPRNet access via the Schriever network to have their tokens by Dec. 21. The deadline for obtaining your token is fast approaching. The 50th Space Communications Squadron is issuing tokens in Building 400 MOD 3/4 Monday-Friday, between the hours of 8-10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. For more information, please contact John T. The MFLC program is contracted through the Department of Defense to provide non-medical, problem solving counseling for service members and their families as well as contractors and civilian employees. Sports council holds meeting
The 4th Quarter Sports Advisory Council Meeting is Dec. 12 at the fitness center. Annual fit to fight reservations will be determined at this mandatory meeting. At least one representative from each squadron should attend. In order to be eligible for a PT time, your squadron must have an up-to-date Sports Advisory Council Appointment Letter on file with the fitness center. A one-hour block of time per week will be available for the following areas: the basketball court, the indoor running track, the outdoor track and the aerobics room. Join 'The Murph'
The main fitness center will be hosting "The Murph" competition Dec. 14. The Murph consists of a one-mile run followed by 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups and 300 body-squats followed by another 1-mile run. Contestants will have one-hour to complete this grueling event. The pull-ups, push-ups, and body-squats can be completed in any order but the 1-mile runs must "book-end" the event. You must pre-register for this event no later than Dec. 12. You will receive your start time when you register. All participants completing the event in less than 60 minutes will receive a free T-shirt.
