Happy #FairfordFriday! This week's history tidbit has to do with the mighty British-built #Concorde ‘002’, which made its maiden voyage from Filton to RAF Fairford in early 1969. The momentous 22-minute flight was piloted by Brian Trubshaw and John Cochrane. Emerging from the cockpit at Fairford, Brian Trubshaw remarked ‘It was wizard – a cool, calm and collected operation’. For the next two and a half years, there was an extensive development programme at RAF Fairford, enabling it to quickly achieve Mach 2 flight – twice the speed of sound. #Fairford75th #LightTheWay
You've heard of #USAFEGRIT by now. You've heard our senior leaders discuss its importance. But how are our Airmen being personally impacted by #GRIT, and how is it connecting Airmen to each other and to the mission? “Operation GRIT is something that needs to be taken outside of the training environment and be applied daily in and out of the work center,” said Staff Sgt. Laura Gonzalez, 501st Combat Support Wing Emergency Management specialist. ”It will help Airmen, but only if the principles and concepts are actively applied and not just a soundbite. Each and every Airman is a leader, which the Air Force needs now more than ever. It takes actions, not a title, to be a leader.” Gonzalez stays #resilient through maintaining balance mentally, spiritually, and physically, focusing on controlling the things she can control, and practicing daily gratitude. Thanks for sharing your perspective! #LightTheWay U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa
Last Thursday, we had the pleasure of sitting down with our new 501st CSW Command Chief, CMSgt Dan Keene and his wife, Tina, for an interview as part of our new Leader Talk series. Check out the interview below and watch for our next interview with Col. Jason Schmidt, 501st CSW Vice Commander. #LeaderTalk #Pathfinders #LightTheWay
#LeaderTalk Say hello and congratulations to our newest Airman Leadership School graduates! Welcome to #FairfordFridays, where we'll share a little bit of Fairford's storied history each week in honor of the base's 75th anniversary. Did you know that 54 years ago, the beloved RAF Red Arrows formed at RAF Fairford? The Royal Air Force’s world famous aerobatic team started life in the Cotswolds in 1965. They performed their first display there, and were based at the Gloucestershire airfield until moving just up the road a year later to RAF Kemble in 1966. Stay tuned for more next Friday 😎 #Fairford75th #LightTheWay
Yesterday marked the official start to a unique new program at the 422 Air Base Group. Congratulations to Staff Sgt. Elder, Staff Sgt. Stevens and Senior Airman Diaz, who have been selected to participate in the Brackley Town Council Mayor's Cadet Programme! This is the first time U.S. Visiting Forces in the 501st Combat Support Wing have been given this unique opportunity to serve the commuity of Brackley. The chosen cadets will proudly represent the U.S. military by accompnaying the Mayor at civic and community events throughout the year. We look forward to the start of a unique and lasting partnership! #LightTheWay #StrongPartners Photo credit: Brackley Town Council
Here’s a lesson that CMSAF Wright had to share about making mistakes and being there for our fellow Wingman. #USAFEGRIT
A big shoutout to our 420th Munitions Airmen for their participation in the 2nd annual USAFE Combat Ammunition Production Exercise in Aviano Air Base, Italy last week. Way to represent a Championship Team! #Pathfinders #LightTheWay
#LeaderTalk Had a great day with the 421st Air Base Squadron at RAF Menwith Hill! Thanks to our amazing Pathfinders we’ve visited all 7 of our Main Operating Bases in the first 3 weeks…no surprise, across the wing our team is doing amazing things. Looking forward to many more opportunities to see our Airmen in action… incredibly proud to be part of the 501st!! -Col Wendt #LightTheWay
There is an Airman working long hours behind the shadows to protect computer networks from cyberattacks. In his role as the 423rd Communications Squadron's network operations technician, Senior Airman Dorian Stacy works closely with other Air Force coders from RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, Ramstein Air Base, Germany and more, to find and share solutions that protect our networks, ensuring United States Air Force cybersecurity #readiness. The 501st paid their respects on August 3rd at the re-dedication memorial for the crew of the B-17G Flying Fortress "Miss Liberty Bell." The ceremony commemorates the brave men who lost their lives when they crashed near the village of Wymington returning from their mission over Germany 75 years ago. Thank you to the community of Wymington for treating our fallen service members with the same honor and respect as your own. #Pathfinders #LightTheWay #WymingtonRemembers
Today is the 30 day countdown to RAF Fairford's 75th anniversary celebration! RAF Fairford has been utilized by the U.S. Air Force nearly continuously since it was built in 1944 and continues to support the B-52, KC-10, KC-135, B-2, B-1 and other aircraft. We look forward to celebrating the 75th with our RAF counterparts and mission partners! #Fairford75th #LightTheWay
#LeaderTalk Thanks for our Airmen at RAF Fairford and RAF Welford for hosting Chief Keene and I last week. The work you do is incredibly far-reaching - from enabling global strike out of U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa’s only bomber forward operating location to equipping the theatre’s second largest munitions storage facility. It’s great to see the pride you each take in your work on a daily basis. -Col Wendt #LightTheWay
#LeaderTalk Get to know your leadership team! Over the past few weeks, our new wing leadership team visited airmen across the 501st learning the #Pathfinder mission. Now, it's your turn to get to know them. Send us a Facebook message with your questions and we'll select some to ask them in our upcoming #LeaderTalk video series. We'll be accepting questions through the end of the day tomorrow. Ask away! #LightTheWay
#LeaderTalk The immersions continue! Chief Keene and I visited with Airmen from the 422nd Air Base Group yesterday at RAF Croughton. This team fuels our mission by delivering worldwide communications, enabling strike operations and developing combat-ready Airmen. Thanks for all you do. -Col Wendt #LightTheWay
