  • Month of the Military Child: Big thumbs up from Papi

I feel it’s safe to say, in general, most men look up to their dads to some degree. Sure, there are some bad apples here and there but it’s fairly common to esteem one’s father and feel a desire to impress him. For me, that has always been the case. Dad’s validation means a lot. If you’re familiar with Disney’s “Kronk’s New Groove,” you know Kronk (a big, dumb, but well intentioned and loyal guy), spends the whole movie trying to get a “big thumbs up from Papi.”
  • Month of the Military Child: Step by step

I have always been competing with my father. Let me clarify.
  • Why I wear the uniform

One of the reasons I am here today has to do with my parents.
  • Are you a servant leader?

As an avid fan of my beloved University of Kentucky Wildcats, and a college basketball fan in general, March Madness is, without a doubt, my favorite sporting event of the year.
  • You can’t give what you don’t have

Recently, one of our great 50th Space Wing chaplains asked the Schriever first sergeants if we would like to attend a class on combatting compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue is a very real issue that often affects first responders, counselors and other caregivers. These people spend so much time with other people’s problems, they eventually “run out” of compassion, or put simply, become jaded. I believe variations of this can happen to leaders at all levels from frontline supervisors to commanders.
  • Are your contracting requirements execution ready?

It’s hard to believe six months have already passed since my last commentary, where I discussed the successful end of fiscal 2016 enjoyed by the 50th Space Wing as a result of the hard work and partnerships built between 50th Contracting Squadron, 50th Comptroller Squadron, 50th Civil Engineer Squadron and our mission partners.
  • Successful empowerment requires positive communication

I firmly believe in encouraging decision-making at the lowest possible leadership level: this allows our organizations to stay fluid and agile to defeat a broad spectrum of challenges in a transient environment. Leaders at the lowest levels are typically the first to observe and orient to a situation: an Airman may be struggling to cope with the loss of a sister or an adversary may develop an advanced new capability to threaten our missions. With proper commander’s intent, training and most importantly empowerment, these leaders can quickly decide on courses of action and execute plans to respond to issues, such as a supervisor may counsel a grieving member or a tactician may save billions of dollars of Air Force space hardware.
  • Winning as an Air Force way of life

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. – Everyone loves a winner. So does our Air Force. Our Air Force mission statement charges us to fly, fight and win in air, space and cyberspace. Here, we operate every day producing effects in all three warfighting domains. Our mission environments are becoming more contested and congested. Obviously, our military,
  • It's okay to ask

My role as the 50th Operations Group first sergeant allows me the privilege to act as an adviser to six commanders regarding the health, morale and welfare of our Airmen who are charged with delivering global combat effects to defend our nation and its interests.
  • The power of words

At the last Schriever Update, Chaplain (Maj.) Martin Adamson, 50th Space Wing Chapel office, shared an inspirational Presidents’ Day tribute. Indeed, several former U.S. Presidents have delivered powerful speeches with memorable lines that have endured the test of time.  Consider these classics: - “Fourscore and seven years ago…” - “The only thing
